Chasing and repoussé for the past 30 years has connected me with artists as far back as the Bronze Age, 4000 years ago, and as recently as fellow smiths of present day. Well known ancient examples of this artform are chalices and classic suits of armor you might find in museum collections to the largest known piece of C&R: the Statue of Liberty standing in New York Harbor.

Chasing is the art of pushing metal with thousands of hammer taps against rounded punches (unlike engraving which removes metal), and repoussé is hammered from the back to raise the image in 3 dimensions. Each piece starts as chasing the lines of a drawing laid over a flat sheet of metal and then flipped over to push out the back to create relief. The piece is flipped over many times this way to raise, shape and smooth the picture or design. The hours involved are too numerous to count. The love of creation and working the metal melt time away as I work.
Each of these pieces is a unique work on copper, bronze, or silver. My work is available through the League of NH Craftsmen in Concord New Hampshire or contact me directly at: 18k@comcast.net for pricing and place custom orders.
