The family Gift

“THE FAMILY GIFT” It was at the old man’s will reading where the shit really hit the fan. There were six kids in the family. Five of them had been sucking up to father for years. The sixth, Fanny, had been disowned years ago because she stopped being a good girl and coming whenever daddy snapped his fingers. That made her the black sheep, the bad seed, the ungrateful daughter. It gave all the others permission to dislike her and heave all the family blame her way. When Mother died, it was Fanny’s fault for not taking care of her.…

Feeding the Cats

I thought I’d write some short fiction in my blogs to change things up since I’m not very good at gabbing about myself… “Feeding The Cats” Felicia Carde bought 6 tins of cat food every day ever since her husband ran off with another woman. Chicken, beef tenders, and fish. The cats loved them all. She wasn’t a typical ‘cat lady’ though. She was quite active in the community working in the soup kitchen, volunteering at the library, and even a substitute teacher at the middle school. But at home it was just her and the cats. It was amazing…

We have eyes…but do we really see?

An obvious observation about a dog is that you can hand them anything and they’ll accept it without understanding. A lump of food, a digital watch, a stick, a can of soda are all in the same basic place to them: can I or can’t I eat it? When they’re through with it, the item joins the background noise of their lives. But a less overused metaphor is when you point at the clouds or the stars for the dog and all they see is the end of your finger. Looking up, or observing the background of the world, is…

What if the world was like Heaven

I suppose the obsession with superhero stories these days is because the world is so stressful and problems seem so overwhelming that people dream about larger than life characters that can swoop in and save us all. I read Spidey and Thor when I was a kid because when you’re a kid your immediate world is so overwhelming that dreaming heroes that understand and take charge is a parental kind of thing. But, as adults do we really want to admit that our obsession in movies and TV with superhero, military hero, vigilante hero worship is really telling us that…

human endeavor on a planck scale

It’s amazing how we each can get so absorbed into our own endeavors that we become fascinated with the tiniest nibblets of information about our passion. Abraham Lincoln’s chipped tooth, the slightly lower engine output in the early ’67 Lotus vs. the same model later that year, a misprinted 1st edition, and so forth. Our lives have become so removed from necessity that we hone our natural OCD in less than essential directions. I’ve come to the conclusion that we don’t suffer from Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder, we benefit from it. It’s what drives us. We climbed down out of the trees…

Why serve the public?

What makes some people volunteer their time and others choose not to? This is a theme in my FOIL stories given that my character spends his nights helping people in need. I can’t say what he does during the day because it would be a spoiler for readers of the opening stories.  I grew up wondering about community and how to connect. My parents taught me that giving back and sharing are important parts of the human community. Parents, role models, and peers are where most people learn this. But I was a shy introvert and unsure how or where…

What Makes The Foil Different From Other Superheroes?

Why create another superhero? Marvel and DC have the public swimming in superhero characters that perform heroic acts saving the universe from untold horror. There are countless spinoffs and spoofs and graphic novels that populate pop culture all doing pretty much the same thing. One thing they aren’t doing is behaving like human beings in the world we live in. They need great power to defeat great evil. Which is a wonderful fantasy and we all love to escape.  But what happens when our heroes are down there in the dirt with real villains and just as vulnerable as anyone…

I never imagined being a teacher

I hated school. Loathed it. The morning after I finished high school I skipped graduation and left home. My life took me into the arts, family and a new country. Except for a brief time with an apprentice and training some colleagues, I worked alone for 40 years. When I started running NCTV (our local TV station) 7 years ago, I took on some student interns as part of the job. I think I learned more than they did at first. I’ve had 11 interns so far learning screen, broadcast & news writing, TV anchoring and interviewing. This spring, I…

Quantum Science Fiction

I’m a science fiction writer (among other things) and I have some warped out ideas I like to read and write about. What would that be? (I thought you’d never ask!) Why, time theory, quantum gravity, raspberry flavored upquarks and a whole 3 branepan full of other stuff involving planck scale mechanics. I enjoy stories that take place inside the amazing universe of what I like to call ‘Quantum Science Fiction’. There are a few writers who meddle in that universe of hard science fiction. “The Martian” by Andy Weir and “The 3 Body Problem” by Cixin Liu to name…

What does ‘planck scale’ mean?

Max Planck was a turn of the 20th century physicist who mathematically determined the absolute smallest measurable size, time, and distance. Unimaginably small! The planck length (10-33cm) is so minuscule that if one magnified the earth to the size of our solar system, you still couldn’t see a planck sized particle. I guess I thought that a fitting starting point to build from in this blog. I like to delve into the minutiae of an idea and explore it on a ‘Fantastic Voyage’ scale of a tiny ship traveling through a human blood stream. I used to wonder about the…

Here I go again, starting another blog…

I made beautiful precious metal handmade flutes for 45 years. My unique instruments earned me international acclaim on a modest scale and a place in flutemaking history. But my dedication to flutes didn’t leave room to really pursue writing, or flying, or metal sculpture, enough to make a career from them. When I retired from flutemaking seven years ago and took a job running the local TV station I finally have time to chase a writer’s life. I have 2 kids novels, published in the mid 2000’s, and some stories and articles out there. THE FOIL is a new series…
