I hated school. Loathed it. The morning after I finished high school I skipped graduation and left home. My life took me into the arts, family and a new country. Except for a brief time with an apprentice and training some colleagues, I worked alone for 40 years. When I started running NCTV (our local TV station) 7 years ago, I took on some student interns as part of the job. I think I learned more than they did at first. I’ve had 11 interns so far learning screen, broadcast & news writing, TV anchoring and interviewing. This spring, I returned to fencing and was immediately asked if I wanted to coach. I said sure and attended a weekend coaching clinic to learn the basics.

Right now I have 3-4 learning fencing and 3 in writing & broadcasting. It is a huge life change in my 60’s. Not a bad one, just different. Each one of these people bring a unique challenge. I raised 2 children and 3 grandsons. I understand kids and I’ve been fortunate that these guys are motivated and smart. I still have a lot to learn and I like that challenge as well.

I often feel that I’m always learning something new. So much for hating school.
